Two monster wildfires in Northern California are slowly being tamed, but not after earning a dubious place among the most destructive the state has ever endured. USA TODAY
A new wildfire in Northern California has killed one person and destroyed or damaged 10 homes in Monterey County, a week after two other blazes killed five people and destroyed at least 1,400 homes, fire officials said Sunday.
The blaze quickly grew to 1,200 acres after starting Saturday afternoon, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
The person who died has not been identified.
Evacuation advisories were issued for residents of Jamesburg and the nearby community of Cachagua, Cal Fire said.
Two other deadly fires roaring through Northern California have destroyed more than 1,400 homes and threaten thousands more, state fire officials said.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said at least 888 homes have burned in the Valley Fire, 130 miles north of San Francisco, that already has been blamed in three deaths. The Butte Fire in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas has destroyed 535 residences, CalFire said. That fire has been blamed for two deaths.
Both fires have also burned hundreds of barns, garages and other structures.
There have been some gains. The Valley fire was 53% contained Sunday; the Butte fire was 70% contained.
More than a dozen fires are raging across the drought-stricken state, displacing more than 20,000 residents. More than 10,00 firefighters are battling the blazes.
