The Two-Wheeled Terror Trailer: The Program

After a career spent plumbing British identity with films like The Queen, My Beautiful Laundrette, and Dirty Pretty Things, Stephen Frears has turned his lens on something exquisitely American: the Lance Armstrong doping scandal. The Program recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and with a theatrical release looming next month for much of Europe, distributor StudioCanal has rolled out a new international trailer.

Starring Ben Foster (Six Feet Under, The Messenger) as the former pro cyclist whose post-cancer racing dominance was built on a foundation of performance-enhancing drugs, the movie spans the entirety of Armstrong’s professional career—from his early-90s debut to his 2011 retirement—and then the crumbling of his facade. It’s based on British journalist David Walsh’s 2012 book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong, which details his journey chasing the Armstrong story as a reporter at London’s Sunday Times. It’s also the rare mainstream feature to be about cycling. Let’s see, there’s Breaking Away, Quicksilver, Premium Rush…dunno, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure? At any rate, we don’t know when it’s coming to the U.S., but based on the trailer and our love for Frears, Ben Foster, and Chris O’Dowd (who plays Walsh), we are in.

Pause at: :39 for what looks to be Armstrong’s first Tour de France stage win, at Limoges in 1995 (though he didn’t wear a helmet in real life); :45 for the first look at Jesse Plemons as teammate (and eventual disgraced Tour de France winner in his own right) Floyd Landis; 1:01 for Lance’s infamous “zip it” moment from the 2004 Tour.
Essential Quote: “I’m Lance Armstrong—and I will not be brought down.” —Armstrong (Foster)
