A woman gave birth to seven babies in the town of Celaya in the first-ever birth of septuplets in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, but one of the infants died, medical authorities said.

The Guanajuato Health Secretariat reported on Twitter the birth by Cesarean section of the septuplets - four girls and three boys - at the Celaya Maternity Hospital.

The tweet said that a multidisciplinary team at the hospital attended Maria del Rosario Hernandez Tovar, 30, who had undergone a fertility treatment.

Hospital director Jose Luis Hernandez said that "we attended the birth of six babies by the woman, the problem is that it was too soon," a reference to the gestation period of just 25 1/2 weeks.

"She underwent a Cesarean and had seven babies. Unfortunately, one of the baby girls weighed too little - the minimum weight that would have given hopes she would live is from 500 to 550 grams (1 lb, 2 oz. to 1 lb. 3 oz.). That girl weighed 450 grams (1 pound)," the doctor said, as cited in local media.

State Health Secretary Francisco Ignacio Ortiz Aldana said that everything humanly possible is being done to care for the three girls and three boys who survived, and who weigh between 550 and 650 grams (1 lb. 3oz. and 1 lb. 6 oz.).

Hospital officials said the mother is in weak but stable condition.
