To Glimpse Pope Francis, Ticket or Patience Is Required

When he visits the United States for the first time later this month, Pope Francis will meet with both the mighty (world leaders, members of Congress, archbishops) and the meek (homeless people, schoolchildren, day laborers).

But for those in between, the millions of people who are expected to flock to New York, Philadelphia and Washington as Francis travels in the Northeast for five days, catching even a glimpse of him will require a ticket — or a large dose of patience.

The Archdiocese of Washington announced on Thursday that the pontiff, after meeting with President Obama at the White House, will ride in his popemobile around the Ellipse, the park south of the White House, and part of the National Mall from about 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sept. 23.

Unlike in New York, where Francis will make a similar procession through Central Park, members of the public will not need a ticket. But they must enter through one of several security screening gates that will open on the Ellipse and National Mall from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m., the archdiocese said.

“We’ve gotten so many requests from people asking, ‘Where can we see the pope?’” said Chieko Noguchi, a spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Washington. The largest event planned in Washington is the Mass on Sept. 23 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in which Francis will canonize the missionary friar Rev. Juniperro Serra as a saint. That requires tickets, however, and attendance is capped at 25,000, Ms. Noguchi said.

The parade along the National Mall was the solution, she said: “It will allow more people to be able to see the Holy Father.”

In New York, the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday that more than 93,000 New York State residents had entered a city-sponsored lottery for tickets to see the papal motorcade go through Central Park on Sept. 25. Ultimately, 80,000 people will be able to watch the procession in person.

Time Warner Cable customers can watch seven days of wall-to-wall pope coverage on Channel 199, starting Sept. 20 with his Sunday Mass at Havana Revolution Square in Cuba, where he is traveling before coming to the United States, and ending with his departure on Sept. 27. Those in search of a slightly more intimate, if still screen-bound, experience can gather at the grounds around the Washington Monument to watch the pope’s Washington events on Sept. 23, including a prayer with hundreds of American bishops at St. Matthew’s Cathedral and the canonization Mass, on a Jumbotron video screen.

The pope’s largest event in New York, a Mass at Madison Square Garden, will also require tickets, which are being distributed through individual parishes.

Francis will end his tour in Philadelphia as the star attraction for the World Meeting of Families, a Catholic conference on family values. While most events there, too, are ticketed, any member of the public will be able to attend the centerpiece of the meeting, Francis’ Mass on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. A good vantage point, however, is not guaranteed: Those without tickets will be kept back at a distance of two and a half blocks.
