Ohio State University vs. Virginia Tech

After losing at home last year to Virginia Tech, Ohio State redeemed itself Monday night with a 42-24 victory over the Hokies. Junior Cardale Jones led Ohio State under center, throwing 186 yards and two touchdowns.

After the first half, Virginia Tech had a shot. The team was ahead of last year’s national champs 17-14. But the Buckeyes scored 28 points in the second half, while their opponent only scored 7, securing the win for the Buckeyes.

Stanford University vs. Northwestern University

While Stanford was the favored team to win in the weekend matchup, the Northwestern Wildcats came out on top with a 16-6 win. You could say the Wildcats’ assistant coach, Jerry Brown, was excited.

The Cardinal struggled get their running and passing games going, showing that a strong last-season finish doesn’t necessarily carry over. The Wildcats had game-changing contributions from quarterback Clayton Thorson, who ran for a 42-yard touchdown, and Justin Jackson, who had 134 yards rushing.

Arizona State University vs. Texas A&M University

Texas A&M showed off a new defense Saturday when, in one of the biggest upsets of the weekend, it defeated Arizona State 38-17. Quarterback Kyle Allen threw 198 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the projected Pac-12 frontrunner.

This week, Texas A&M will take on Ball State on its home field as the now-unranked Sun Devils take on Cal Poly at home.

University of Nebraska vs. Brigham Young University

For the first time in 30 years, Nebraska lost its season opener to a last-second Hail Mary pass by BYU. The Huskers, led by new coach Mike Reilly, had a 28-27 lead with one second left on the clock; then BYU quarterback Tanner Magnum threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Mathews to get a 33-28 win.

When first-string quarterback Taysom Hill sustained a season-ending injury to his foot, Magnum — who hadn’t played in an organized football game since 2012  — took over. According to USA TODAY reports, Magnum is expected to start in BYU’s home game this week against Boise State.

University of Kansas vs. South Dakota State University

For the first time in Jackrabbit history, South Dakota State beat a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent.

The Jackrabbits took a 31-7 lead by the end of the first half, thanks to quarterback Zach Lujan, who threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns. Nearing the end of the game, Kansas was catching up and just needed a field goal to tie the score.

Before time ran out, Kansas tried to spike the ball but instead fumbled it on the final snap. While Jayhawk quarterback Montell Cozart says the final snap was his fault, first-time Division I Kansas coach David Beaty said the team wouldn’t have even come close to winning without Cozart’s 291 passing yards and touchdown throw.

South Dakota State came out on top, beating Kansas 41-38.

University of Notre Dame vs. The University of Texas-Austin

Notre Dame embarrassed the Longhorns Saturday in a 38-3 win, but the victory came with a cost.

The Irish lost their lead running back, Tarean Folston, to an ACL tear. Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire led the team to its first season win with 313 yards, three scores and no interceptions.

This week the Irish will take on Virginia; Texas will try to redeem itself as it takes on Rice University at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

University of California-Los Angeles vs. The University of Virginia

UCLA’s freshman quarterback started his career with a bang.

Josh Rosen led the No. 14 Bruins to a 34-16 victory Saturday, passing for 351 yards and three touchdowns. Rosen threw a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and his first collegiate touchdown pass came at the close of the first quarter.

This week, UCLA is pitted against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The University of Virginia is up against Notre Dame University after its big win against Texas.
