Well, you did it. You survived the marketing onslaught of Disney’s Star Wars Global Toy Unboxing on Wednesday, and on Thursday you managed to read about the BB-8 robot toy without soiling youself with excitement. And now your patience is being rewarded. Force Friday has come and gone, and now you can actually get all those Force Awakens toys you’ve suddenly developed a hankering for! (For you completists with unlimited funds, there’s a handy checklist so you can make sure you really overdo it.)

For the most part, though, any looks you get at these toys are going to be on a store’s website. Is that any way to drool over a plastic tie-in to a movie? No. No, it is not. That’s why we headed over to Industrial Light & Magic’s headquarters the other morning: to get the first glimpse at the range of products that’s now on sale. It ranges from toys like action figures, lightsabers, and Lego sets to apparel, plush toys, and costumes, stretching back to the original trilogy and all the new major characters in The Force Awakens.

Josh Valcarcel/WIREDSome of the coolest items, which give a tiny glimpse into what the film will be like, aren’t the most obvious ones. Disney execs were careful to point out that everything featured in this first wave of products is spoiler-free, including the books, which contain easter eggs and lay background for the new characters when they first appear in the new film. But the costume masks for characters like Kylo Ren and Phasma have the added feature of playing lines of dialogue recorded by the actors portraying them in the movie: Adam Driver and Gwendoline Christie, respectively. Since there has been hardly any dialogue in the trailers, the masks are the first chance for fans to hear how either of those characters will sound in the film.One nice surprise—and one that executives presenting the items touched on repeatedly—is that Disney, Lucasfilm, and all their licensees are invested inn making the product line appeal across the demographic spectrum, specifically with regard to female fans. There’s still controversy over the character breakdown for The Force Awakens and Rogue One that leaves major female characters as a minority in the Star Wars universe. But at the very least, the marketing angle for the films has shifted considerably, making a major push to tailor products to female fans—and not in the obnoxious pro-sports way of making everything pink. The coolest piece of apparel we saw at the unveiling was a stylish t-shirt featuring Daisy Ridley on her speeders, and from all the Rey and Phazma items on display, it’s clear that Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t leaving any sector of the fan base behind in the run-up to The Force Awakens.
