Come into the conference room and take a seat, please. It's 1969, and you're an executive at Bell Telephone (now AT&T). Legendary graphic designer Saul Bass is about to pitch his plan to completely rebrand the company. Quiet — here he comes now...
This remarkable video was shown to Bell executives as part of a presentation produced by Saul Bass' company. Thankfully the video still survives so all of us can relive the pitch. The video begins with an overview of the changing times in the ‘60s — the focus on Bell begins around the 5:30 mark.
Bass' vision for a new corporate identity is all-encompassing, from vans and trucks to uniforms, jewelry, directories, and phone booths. For the all-important and iconic logo, the presentation explains that "we explored all possible bell forms, searching for the most up-to-date expression; emerging finally with the bell that has strength and impact, and above all, the look of today."
With the benefit of foresight, Bass' seems to be little short of an oracle. Beyond Bell, Bass' arguments in style and identity seem timeless. It's funny to remember that Bass actually had to sell executives on his vision considering he turned out to be so right in the end.
