The Tesla Model X crossover will be available Sept. 29 from the company’s Fremont, Calif., factory. This will be the very first deliveries of a $132,000 Model X Signature edition — “fully loaded,” says Tesla’s Elon Musk. He pegs it at $5,000 more than a similarly equipped Tesla Model S sedan. One other sign the crossover is finally happened: Tesla has opened a restricted-access configurator on its site and invited influencers and key friends of Tesla to be first to order.

For $132,000, you get an all-wheel-drive three-row vehicle with Falcon Wing doors, a 90 kWh battery pack, and Tesla’s AutoPilot self-driving technology.

Cheaper Model X in 2016

TeslaX_front_gullwing_920px_cropped The regular production run of the Model X comes later and will be about $25,000 less for the base price, based on Musk’s description of the $5K price delta vs. Model S. The Reserve Now button on the Tesla site says, “The delivery estimate for new reservations is early 2016.” Tesla asks a $5,000 deposit.

To $132,000 for the Signature Series, add $1,200 for “destination & regulatory doc fee,” less $7,500 in federal and $2,500 (in California) credits, and less $10,000 in estimated fuel savings. Thus Tesla on its configurator page lists it as a $112,000 car. Tesla asks a $40,000 deposit from those looking to get to the head of the line via the early adopter Signature Series offer.

The Signature Series (P90D) configurator lists other options. Ludicrous Mode (imagine stately GM using that term) runs $10,000 and lowers 0-60 mph to 3.2 seconds from 3.8 seconds. The Subzero Weather Package, $1,000, comprises a heated steering wheel, heated seats, heated washer fluid, and windshield wiper defrosters. The Towing Package, $750, handles trailer loads up to 5,000 pounds. On a configuration worked up by the Tesla Motors Club, the third row of seating is shown as a $3,500 option, although elsewhere it’s shown as standard. That makes a fully equipped Model X Signature Series $147,700 before the $7,500 federal tax credit available to all US taxpayer buyers, $140,200 after.

$35,000 Tesla Model E in 2017-2018?

TeslaX_3-4LR_doorsup_1344px Meanwhile, Musk said the affordable Tesla Model 3 sedan is about two years away from production, meaning late 2017 or early 2018. If the timing slips, that wouldn’t be unprecedented for a company on the cutting edge of car tech. It will be formally unveiled in March 2016. Musk notes the “fully operational Gigafactory [is] needed,” referring to Tesla’s giant lithium battery factory on Electric Avenue in Sparks, NV, near Reno, NV.

What’s not clear is what a “$35,000″ Tesla Model E will cost. Tesla typically automatically deducts the currently available $7,500 tax credit (thus a $42,500 cash price car), sometimes the California credit of $2,500 (thus, $45,000), and no automaker ever cites the shipping charge, which in Tesla’s case runs a hefty $1,200 for the Model X. Assuming Tesla hasn’t baked in the estimated fuel savings vs. a comparable gasoline-engine car (the $10,000 calculation on the Model X), this is a car in base condition you’ll find selling for $45,000 and probably in the fifties if there’s a battery pack enhancement. A Nissan Leaf sells for about $30,000, but Tesla is talking about a driving range of up to 300 miles.

All in all, it has been a good month for Tesla, including Consumer Reports’ declaration that the Model S is the best car CR ever tested — scoring 103 on a 100-point scale before CR adjusted the curve down to 100.
