Latest Apple TV rumor suggests skimpier storage, reiterates lack of 4K

The next Apple TV might not have a lot of room for apps and games if a new report by 9to5Mac proves accurate.

The site, which tends to have a strong record with Apple rumors, claims that Apple’s next set-top box won’t exceed 16GB of storage. Apple may include 16GB in the base model, reportedly priced at $149, or it could charge $199 version for the 16GB version while putting just 8GB in the base model.

In any case, the latest report appears to contradict earlier rumors from both 9to5Mac and BuzzFeed. Last month, 9to5Mac said it expected at least 32GB of storage in the new Apple TV, and BuzzFeed reported in March that the new device would have “well beyond” the 8 GB in the current Apple TV.

Storage aside, 9to5Mac’s report reiterates a couple of other Apple TV tidbits: It will reportedly use a dual-core variant of the iPhone 6’s A8 chip, but optimized for more power as battery efficiency is not an issue, and it won’t support 4K video. The remote will reportedly be dark gray or black instead of silver, and may have buttons for Home, Siri, and volume controls, along with a widely-rumored touch pad. Available ports will be the same as the current Apple TV, with HDMI and USB for troubleshooting and connecting to iTunes. In other words, don’t expect expandable storage.

Apple has scheduled a press event for September 9, when the company is likely to announce the new Apple TV and new iPhones.

Why this matters: It’s somewhat surprising that Apple would limit the new set-top’s storage to 8GB or even 16GB. While competing set-top boxes have similar base storage, they also allow for expansion, whether it’s through USB drives (as with Amazon’s Fire TV and Nvidia’s Shield Android TV) or MicroSD (on Roku and Shield). The next Apple TV will reportedly have a proper App Store and a big focus on gaming, but storage could fill up quickly for users who want an extensive app and game selection.
