Updated 11:40 a.m.

Good morning on this stiflingly hot Wednesday.

Sometimes, life in a city known for moving so quickly that it has its own unit of time requires stopping. And waiting.

And waiting.

In an interactive feature of photographs and brief interviews, Times journalists chronicled New Yorkers doing something we’d rather avoid: wait on line.

(Oh, and that’s another thing: Here, we say “on line,” not “in line.” Perhaps to make it seem more like a quest than a trial.)

Take a look at how time was spent waiting to take a dip in Crotona Park public pool, to eat at Rippers food stand at Rockaway Beach, for free admission to the Neue Galerie, to say goodbye at the last taping of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” to experience some culture at Shakespeare in the Park, for a taste of spirituality at a book signing by an evangelical preacher, and to snag a ball at a Mets game.

Some of the New Yorkers pictured spoke to Corey Kilgannon, a reporter for The Times who writes the Character Study column each week.

Mr. Kilgannon told us he had wanted to capture New York’s summer rituals, which is why he had headed to the beach, to a pool, and to a ballgame, among other destinations.

At some of the lines, the interviews were harder than at others. “We’d ask, ‘Why are you waiting on line?” he said.

“And they’d say for the tickets. But for the most part, it was easy to get people to talk beyond that.”

Except at the pool, apparently. “People just wanted to get in the water.”

Here’s what else is happening:

WEATHER

It’s feverishly hot again today, with a high of 90, and very little breeze to speak of.

More of the same tomorrow.

Summer must want to make a dramatic exit or something.

AND FINALLY …

Debates about the best (fill in the blank) of New York rage in every corner of the city.

A particularly fierce one is over the best New York burger.

There are the traditional and initialed mainstays, like P. J. Clarke’s and J. G. Melon’s. Then there are the fancy ones, like Minetta Tavern and the 21 Club, and the less fancy ones, like Jackson Hole or Burger Heaven.

The maker of the perfect pub burger is a classic argument, too. Duffy’s Tavern on Staten Island, Brennan and Carr in Sheepshead Bay, and Donovan’s Pub in Woodside are among those with claims.

But today, the Food section brings us something unexpected: a review of Superiority Burger, a vegetarian restaurant in the East Village.

The reviewer, Pete Wells, said the veggie burgers were “seared to an energetic crackle” and had “a satisfyingly tender bulk.”

But the real magic comes in a dessert of “peach sorbet under gelato made with toasted hamburger buns.”

We’d be willing to expand our burger definitions to include both.
