In a move to put pressure on Netflix with something other than Emmy-nominated series like Transparent, Amazon now allows Prime members to download movies and shows to their Android and iOS devices for offline playback. No Internet? No problem.

Previously on those two platforms, the download feature was available only for titles Amazon customers owned outright; the subscription title offline viewing benefit was limited to Kindle Fire tablets. The advantages of offline viewing are immediately apparent; you don’t have to fight a stuttering connection, or abandon your show when there’s no readily available Internet. Business travelers, rejoice. The downside is that large video files can take up a huge amount of storage real estate on your phone; don’t expect to fit an entire season of Orphan Black on there at a time.

The advantage for Amazon? In addition to exclusive titles like Justified, its comprehensive HBO back catalog, and originals like Transparent, it can now persuade streamers to choose it over (or in addition to) Netflix with a technological advantage. To help signify the change, and because the “Prime Instant Video” name was a clunker, the service will now be known simply as Amazon Instant Video.

It’s important to remember that when Amazon invests heavily in offerings like Prime Video it doesn’t necessarily need to be better than Netflix to help serve the company’s goals. Prime Video is just one spoke of the company’s churning Prime wheel, alongside free two-day shipping, Prime Music, unlimited photo storage, and more, all for what amounts to $8.25 per month—a quarter more than the cheapest Netflix plan. If Prime Video’s combination of content and features manages to be even fractionally as good as Netflix, Amazon gets what it wants. If the move forces Netflix to reverse course and offer offline viewing as well, all the better for the rest of us.

Think of today’s update as Amazon’s latest attempt to nudge a new set of fence-sitters—those business travelers, and parents who crave more back seat distractions—over onto Prime’s pastures.
