Good morning on this sweaty Tuesday.

It’s September.

If you find yourself panting like a dog or sweating like a pig today, you won’t be alone.

New York City’s animals have to cope with the extended heat, too, as temperatures swell nearly 10 degrees above average this week, to almost 90.

Our furry, feathered, and finned neighbors have a variety of tricks for staying cool.

Early birds really do catch the worm in this heat, according to the Urban Park Rangers. Birds, and many other urban animals, rise before dawn to forage and to find shady nooks.

At the Riverdale Stables in the Bronx, the horses do the same as many athletes to keep from passing out in the heat: They crowd around fans and drink an electrolyte-laden beverage “that tastes and basically is just like Gatorade,” said Scott Tarter, the owner of the stable.

Domesticated animals have a particularly tough time with the scorching temperatures. Dr. Richard Goldstein, chief medical officer at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, advises pet owners to empathize with their companions by imagining themselves in a sweater that they can’t remove.

When owners leave and shut off the air conditioner to conserve energy, their dogs and cats are sweltering, like humans in mohair.

We would call it the dog days of summer, but it’s a little too late for that — the dog star has come and gone. Today marks the beginning of the meteorological fall.

Here’s what else is happening:

WEATHER

There’s a slight drop in the mercury today, but it will still feel sweltering: Bright and sunny, with a high of 88.

More of the same tomorrow.

AND FINALLY …

During this transitional time from August into September, some of New York’s mayors have found themselves in situations almost as sticky as the weather.

On Sept. 1, 1932, Mayor James J. Walker quit city hall amid accusations of “malfeasance of office” and of running an administration rife with “widespread and notorious inefficiency and corruption.”

It didn’t help that the mayor, also known as Gentleman Jimmy, was known to be having an affair with a showgirl.

Nearly 18 years later, on Aug. 31, 1950, Mayor William O’Dwyer tendered a terse resignation after serving four years in office. He ostensibly left office so he could take up the post of ambassador to Mexico, but it also came amid one of the biggest police scandals in the city’s history.

No one seems to like the end of summer.
