SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A hiker who went missing in the Sierra National Forest nine days ago was found alive Saturday by a search and rescue team.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office said the team found 62-year-old Miyuki Harwood of Orangevale alive in an area east of Courtright Reservoir. Harwood had suffered some broken bones, according to Fresno Sheriff Margaret Mims, but the extent of her injuries was not known.

The Sheriff’s Office said a helicopter was been sent to pick-up Harwood and take her to a hospital for further evaluation.

"While searching in their assigned area, a mutual aid search and rescue team was able to make voice contact with person that was later identified as Ms. Harwood," Mims said during a Saturday afternoon new conference.

Mims said Harwood was found in a remote area, in a very rocky location. A doctor with one of the rescue teams was able to stabilize Harwood once she was found.

Harwood separated from a group of hikers on Aug. 20. Mims said Harwood had no food and only a water filter that allowed her to drink from a creek.

"She was conscious, she was talking, she's very, very grateful that she was found. She's grateful to all of the people that helped look for her," said Mims, who visited with Harwood earlier in the day. "So we expect her condition to just improve as time goes by."

A wildfire burning near the area made the search effort more difficult for the team involved, Mims said.
