(NEWSER) – Not all the news was doom and gloom this week. Here are five of our favorites:

  • Mother and Her Child Born From the Same Womb: More than three decades after she was born from her mother's womb, a Swedish woman gave birth to a child of her own—a child who was also born out of that same womb. How that came to be is seen as part of the biggest fertility medicine breakthrough since IVF.
  • Police Escort Slain Officer's Girl to Kindergarten: Charlee Winebrenner had a special first-day of kindergarten in the form of a police honor guard as she walked into her Ohio school. Her father was a police officer killed in the line of duty, and his fellow officers were keeping a promise.
  • Why This Hiker Didn't Die in the Wilderness: When 52-year-old David Finlayson got hit with a chunk of rock "as big as a fridge" while hiking in remote Idaho, he was knocked out cold for a while and seriously injured. He was also about 13 miles from civilization. Lucky for him, his 13-year-old son was with him—poised under pressure and able to hike out solo.
  • Hugh Jackman Surprises a Young Fan: If you weren't already a fan of Hugh Jackman, this might do the trick: The X-Men star surprised a 9-year-old boy with cystic fibrosis who was visiting a radio station. The boy is a huge Wolverine fan, so the DJs got Jackman on the line. Little did the child know the actor was actually in the next room.
  • Viral Photo Changes Life of Refugee: A Syrian refugee now has money to send his children to school and help others who have fled his war-torn homeland—thanks to Twitter, a photo of him and his daughter selling pens, and the generosity of thousands of people around the world who were moved by the image.
