ATLANTA — A man in his early 60s died Saturday night after falling more than 40 feet from the upper deck at Turner Field during the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves.

After being attended to by fans and paramedics, the man was transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to eyewitnesses, a middle-aged man wearing a Braves cap stood up from his seat in the second row behind home plate to boo the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez when he was announced as a pinch-hitter. The man then seemed to lose his balance and fell forward over several women who were seated in the front row.

He landed on a concrete walkway in the lower bowl of the stadium, not far from where family members of Yankees and Braves players were sitting. Among the first to respond to the man was Sherry McCann, who is the mother of Yankees catcher Brian McCann and is a registered nurse.

The game continued, though the players, coaches and umpires soon became aware of what had happened. A few of them had caught a glimpse of the man falling, and many saw the screen behind home plate shake when the man clipped one of the wires holding it up.

“That’s really sad that something like that can happen at the ballpark,” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said before the man’s death was announced.

It is the third reported death of a fan falling at Turner Field since 2008, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In 2011, a fan died at a Texas Rangers game after falling to a lower level; the man had been trying to catch a baseball that the Rangers’ Josh Hamilton had tossed to him for his son.

On Saturday, witnesses seated near the man in Section 401, in the upper deck behind home plate, said the fall appeared to have been an accident.

“When A-Rod came up, he got up really quick and put his hands over his mouth to yell something,” said Donnie Marley of Fayetteville, N.C. “I don’t know if he lost his balance, but he didn’t slip. He just fell over. It was like something you see in the movies.”

Marty Burns of Vernon, Ala., who was with his girlfriend, said: “It was pretty terrible to see. I just turned to look at her like, Did that just happen?”

Within seconds after the man fell, fans and then emergency medical technicians came to his aid, and for more than five minutes they administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until he could be lifted onto a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

The police then roped off the area near where the man had landed.

“It’s devastating,” said Brian McCann, who grew up in an Atlanta suburb and played his entire career with the Braves until leaving as a free agent before last season. “Your hearts and prayers go out to the family. You’re just praying for the best.”
