JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police say the man being held in connection with the disappearance of a Jacksonville toddler has attempted to escape from jail.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says 32-year-old William Ruben Ebron Jr. is facing four new charges related to his escape attempt.
Ebron already faces two counts of child neglect for the July disappearance of Lonzie Barton, his girlfriend's son. The child is still missing, and authorities are investigating it as a homicide.
Authorities say Ebron planned to use a plastic handcuff key to escape during transport to court in a jail van. He also was trying to coordinate another getaway vehicle.
Authorities say another inmate recorded their conversations.
Ebron's new charges include unlawful possession of a concealed handcuff key, introducing or smuggling contraband into a jail and criminal conspiracy.
