Right now: The suspect in the fatal shooting of two TV journalists during a live broadcast has shot himself on Interstate 66 in Fauquier County.
Virginia State Police released the following in a statement:
Shortly before 11:30 a.m., Virginia State Police spotted the suspect vehicle headed eastbound on Interstate 66. With emergency lights activated the Virginia State Police trooper initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle refused to stop and sped away from the trooper. Minutes later, the suspect vehicle ran off the road and crashed. The troopers approached the vehicle and found the male driver suffering from a gunshot wound. He is being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The male driver is believed to be the same male subject who shot three people this morning in Franklin County during a television news interview.
A news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
The third shooting victim, Vicki Gardner of the local chamber of commerce, is recovering and is in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery, according to a Facebook post made by Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
What happened: Two members of local TV news station WDBJ7 were fatally shot Wednesday at 6:45 a.m. during a live TV broadcast at a shopping mall in Moneta, Va., southeast of Roanoke, Va., WDBJ7-TV said.
The live broadcast at the time of the shooting showed reporter Alison Parker interviewing at a resort when, just off camera, shots rang out and Parker is heard screaming. The recording appears to include a glimpse of the gunman dressed in black.
The suspect: Suspect Vester Flanagan, 41, used the name Bryce Williams on air while working for WDBJ as a reporter. Flanagan began tweeting Wednesday at 11:09 a.m. ET about the incident. Flanagan tweeted that Parker made racist comments and that he filed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission report. He also tweeted that Ward went to human resources on him "after working with me one time!!!" Flanagan then tweets that he filmed the shooting and to see it on Facebook. Minutes later, at 11:14 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., he tweets two videos where viewers can see a gun from a shooters perspective and Parker doing her live standup.
Earlier: At 10:30 a.m., Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe told WTOP radio that the suspect was a "disgruntled" station employee.
The victims: WDBJ7 cameraman Adam Ward, 27, and reporter Parker, 24, were killed. Parker was interviewing Vicki Gardner of the local chamber of commerce. Gardner was also shot.
Ward graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Va., and Virginia Tech, the station said. Parker grew up in Martinsville, Va., and attended Patrick Henry Community College and James Madison University.
How WDBJ7 reporters are responding: WDBJ7 general manager Jeffrey Marks said the two were just out doing their job. "This kind of loss will resonate in these halls for a long, long time as we remember in their short lives what dedicated journalism they produced and what outstanding journalists they were," he said.
Chris Hurst, an anchor for the station who says he was Parker's boyfriend, tweeted, "She was the most radiant woman I ever met. And for some reason she loved me back. She loved her family, her parents and her brother." And later: "I am comforted by everyone at @WDBJ7. We are a family. She worked with Adam every day. They were a team. I am heartbroken for his fiancee."
