A manhunt was underway in Franklin County, Virginia after a gunman shot and killed a reporter and photographer from WDBJ7-TV during their live broadcast. An image of the suspected gunman may have also been captured on camera. VPC

Danger is an accepted part of the job for foreign correspondents.

But the shooting of two broadcast journalists in Roanoke, Va., Wednesday is a fresh reminder of the unpredictability and hazards that confront domestic reporters.

At least five journalists have been killed in the U.S. since 1992, when the Committee to Protect Journalists began keeping records, the New York-based advocacy group said.

The most recent killing prior to the Wednesday shooting was in August 2007, when Chauncey Bailey, editor-in-chief of the Oakland Post in California, was shot dead in Oakland.

"In the U.S., journalist killings are relatively rare," CPJ said.

But journalists face harassment, threats of violence, online trolling, equipment theft and on-camera disruption – and the evidence is often only a few clicks away on YouTube and other social media channels.

Alison Parker, a reporter for WDBJ7 in Roanoke, and Adam Ward, a cameraman for the station, were shot Wednesday as they were interviewing a woman in Moneta, Va. Police are looking for Vester Flanagan, whose TV name was Bryce Williams. Video has been posted on what appears to be Williams' Facebook page showing the shooting from the perspective of the shooter.

"We do not yet know the motive of the attack that killed Alison Parker and Adam Ward, but we do know that being a journalist is potentially dangerous anywhere in the world," said CPJ Senior Americas Program Coordinator Carlos Lauría. "We condemn this fatal shooting and send our condolences to the journalists' families and colleagues."

The shooting comes amid a dangerous year globally for journalists. At least 39 journalists have been killed globally, according to CPJ.
