FORT COLLINS, Co. -- A plastic sheet packed by Fort Collins volunteers could be the difference between life and death for expecting moms and their babies in Ugandan refugee camps.

Zonta Club of Fort Collins and volunteers from the Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce Red Carpet Committee made 400 birthing kits Thursday morning for Think Humanity, a Loveland-based nonprofit that works in underdeveloped regions of Uganda.

"They're helping to save lives, but in such simplicity," said Beth Heckel, Think Humanity founder and executive director.

A black plastic sheet is one of the kit's most essential items. Kits also come with a bar of soap, cords, a pair of medical gloves, a sterile razor blade and gauze squares.

Think Humanity Founder and Executive Director Beth Heckel said women in labor are turned away from Ugandan health clinics if they do not have a plastic sheet on which to give birth. Those forced to leave the clinics give birth on the side of the road or at home in unsanitary conditions.

Many women, and their babies, die from infections or other birth complications, Heckel said. According to the World Health Organization, nearly all maternal deaths happen in developing countries and more than half happen in sub-Saharan Africa.

Zonta Club partnered with Think Humanity and area volunteers to provide 1,000 birthing kits by the end of 2015. The kits will be sent to a Think Humanity clinic located outside a Ugandan refugee camp. The clinic will educate expectant moms on how to use the kits and distribute them to those in need.
