Zachary Genteman doesn’t own a car, but he loves to photograph them. His Instagram project Parked is a nostalgia-packed exploration of the cool cars of San Francisco.

He started the series after moving to the city about four years ago. Genteman was amazed at the number of vintage cars, trucks, and other vehicles that line the streets. Juxtaposed against San Francisco’s unique and often colorful architecture, every punch buggy or Bus, ecclectic European car, or American classic all but begged to be photographed. “Each car has its own unique character,” Genteman says. “It’s fun to imagine some of the adventures these automobiles have had throughout the decades.”

Genteman relies upon serendipity to find the fantastic vehicles that fill his feed. Though he sometimes meets a friend for a Sunday sunrise “treasure hunt,” he most often spots cars while riding his motorcycle. He started with his iPhone, but switched to a FujiFilm X-T1 or a Ricoh GR because of its pocketable size.

When he’s not stumbling upon vintage Volkswagen vans, Genteman is an operations manager at Lumoid, a camera and lens rental house. Sometimes he meets people familiar with the project. “It’s always assumed I’m some sort of car aficionado. In reality, my vintage car knowledge is very limited,” he says.

He’s shot about 400 cars and has amassed nearly 18,000 followers. Genteman attributes that success to the “simple, fun and consistent concept.” The photos look great as singles or neatly arranged in the app’s grid. “Plus who does’t appreciate a vintage auto against the beautiful backdrop of San Francisco?!” says Genteman.
