There’s a surprising amount of exposition in “The Last Mabelcorn”: Ford and Dipper bond a little more, which reveals how Ford created a portal to other dimensions and explains who exactly Bill Cypher is. But what really makes the episode shine is that it relegates those elements to the B-plot, while the main story focuses on an all-girl mission to obtain unicorn hair in order to protect the Mystery Shack. Mabel’s dedication to the task borders on zealotry, and when she, Grenda, Candy, and Wendy encounter the elegant unicorn Celestabell Abethabel, they’re in total shock. But then Gravity Falls undercuts this would-be My Little Pony-esque detour in grand fashion; the episode instead focuses on how girls are told they need to be “pure of heart” and always do good deeds. In trying to achieve that purity, Mabel loses sight of her identity as a caring and loving friend—and skeptical Wendy has had enough, leading to this scathing monologue. (Of course, once the unicorn’s ploy turns out to be a scam, the girls pick an epic fight with a herd of unicorns that ends with many, many rainbow tears.) All the world-building in the Dipper/Ford storyline is a satisfying payoff, but Alex Hirsch’s show understands that acknowledging complex emotions can be more creatively fruitful than complex mythology.
