Mexican authorities arrested a woman accused of leading a cartel hit squad who is allegedly responsible for much of the violence plaguing the resort area of Baja California.

Melissa Margarita “La China” Calderón Ojeda was arrested over the weekend near the international airport in Cabo San Lucas, attempting to flee for Culiacán, Sinaloa, on Saturday, Televisa reported.

Alvaro de la Peña, secretary general of Baja California Sur, confirmed the news of Calderón Ojeda's arrest on Sunday, saying it was done "without a shot being fired." He said the arrest was made possible because of the exchange of information and intelligence between all governmental agencies.

"Thanks to the exchange of intelligence and information between all the integrated agencies in the state," he added, "we were able to detain her in a totally clean manner, without a shot being fired."

Often portrayed by the Mexican press as a femme very much fatale, Calderón Ojeda is allegedly the head of a team of sicario assasins that recently broke away from the Damaso group, a criminal organization linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

The 30-year-old has been held part of a recent wave of violent crime that has plagued the Mexican resort area and is believed by government officials to be responsible for a number of murders and other violent acts stemming from a turf war between rival gangs in La Paz.

Mexico's Proceso reported that there have been nearly 180 incidents of violence in the Baja California city, including murder and shootings, this year alone. She is believed to have killed at least nine people.

The Damaso cartel group was started by Damaso “El Lic” López Nuñez, a former Mexican official who is believed to have helped Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán escape from prison the first time in 2001. According to Breitbart, the group is now led by Nuñez’ son, Damaso “El Mini Lic” López.
