Touted as the ‘ultimate luxury fortress on wheels’ Jaguar Range Rover’s bulletproof Sentinel is fit for a James Bond - or for anyone in need of safe transportation from determined adversaries.

The company chose this week’s Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) Show to unveil this impressive car. The Sentinel SUV gives its occupants extremely high levels of protection against a wide variety of threats and attacks.

Just like the standard Range Rover, it’s got all-terrain capability and sits two adults in the back - but this vehicle’s got lots and lots of sexy additional features.

Pimped-out protection

In classic James Bond style, this vehicle gives away zero hints that it has next-gen features hidden throughout.

Super stealthy, if you passed it on the street you’d think it was just another typical Range Rover Autobiography. Beneath its innocuous exterior, this is a fortress on wheels with state-of-the-art armor providing ultimate protection.

So what threats can it shield you against?

7.62mm high velocity, armor piercing incendiary bullets? Too easy for this vehicle. The Sentinel’s got it covered. It can withstand these hard-core rounds.

Explosives? Not a problem. The Sentinel has been designed to protect against blasts from over 33 pounds of TNT – even from explosive attacks beneath and on top of the car.

Grenades? Handled.  The Sentinel is not going to let DM51 grenade attacks harm you.

And of course, the average bullet stands zero chance of penetrating. Defense contractor QinetiQ intensively reviewed the vehicle and gave the Sentinel full certification to VR8 standard against ballistic threats.

Passengers sit within a mega-strong steel armored cell that provides exceptional armored protection.  Instead of standard window glass, the Sentinel has fortified multi-laminated armor privacy glass that prevents bullets from penetrating and keeps occupants safe.

"The Range Rover Sentinel is one of the most extraordinary Range Rovers ever produced. It has been expertly engineered by Special Vehicle Operations to provide class leading levels of protection to occupants against extreme attack, whilst retaining the Range Rover's luxury and refinement with off road capability," said Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director John Edwards in the Sentinel press release.

Fast getaway

In true ‘Batman’ vehicle style, if the tires are shot out or damaged – the Sentinel can still do a speedy evade and escape. In the event of tire deflation, flat inserts in the tires fitted to special 20-inch split rim alloy wheels activate – this means that bad guys can shoot out the tires, but the vehicle will keep going.

The Sentinel also has a supercharged engine that a driver can harness to evade determined attackers. The 340PS 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine, together with a specially calibrated ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, can be leveraged for speedy escapes.

For enhanced attack evasion, there are additional features like uprated suspension and precise on-road maneuverability.

Need to stop abruptly?  The Sentinel has that covered too with maximum stopping power provided by 380mm front and 365mm rear-ventilated disc brakes both equipped with high-density pads.

This fortress also features other clever measures to prevent creative forms of attack. These include a specially-designed anti-tamper exhaust, an auxiliary battery and a self-sealing fuel tank.

Need to bail out of the vehicle fast? Not a problem. Behind the rear seats, the Sentinel is equipped with an Emergency Escape System – this means that if attackers block the main doors folks can still get out fast.

Standard Range Rover features like blind spot monitoring, closing vehicle sensing and surround camera security are also incorporated in this model.

Jaguar Land Rover even offers drivers a training course where they can learn to master handling the vehicle and leverage its features to the max in threatening conditions.

What’s next?

The new Range Rover Sentinel is the first luxury armored vehicle to be fully engineered by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations – so finely crafted, this vehicle is built by hand.

The Sentinel is available in a wide range of exterior paint colors and the interior color options include Ebony, Ivory and Dark Cherry. Bespoke color choices are also available.

Up for nabbing a Sentinel? A sleek fortress on wheels can be yours for approximately $450,000 excluding taxes.
