If you know the work of Prefuse 73, you know the producer tends to make song-within-a-song kind of tracks that intertwine many different layers. Now he has a music video to go along with that sound—so much so that it looks like a M. C. Escher image.

But, it turns out, the inspiration for the video for “Still Pretending” wasn’t a Dutch artist. It actually comes from the Chinatown neighborhood in New York where Prefuse 73 (aka Guillermo Scott Herren) lives.

“The concept of a constant zoom with animation was an idea I had for a long time. I’ve always wanted to create something similar to a fractal image while also telling a story along the way,” says the video’s director, who simply goes by the name lilfuchs. “Guillermo had the idea to make the Sara D. Roosevelt Park a main focal point to tell the story.”

Using that space gave lilfuchs a lot of freedom since the park is rather large and filled with basketball courts, gardens, and playgrounds (you can see their influence in the video). But it also meant there were a lot of elements for lilfuchs to try to cram into three minutes.

“Based on the zoom I had to work completely backwards and that was a great challenge but carefully blocking out the park’s redundant facilities allowed me to be pretty creative,” lilfuchs says. “Thank god for Google Street View.”
