Joseph Danclair had a way with women, the police said. The Brooklyn man could easily strike up a conversation, they said, and in some cases, persuade them to go along with him.

“They had no idea what they were in for,” William Aubry, the New York Police Department’s chief of Manhattan detectives, told reporters on Friday.

Mr. Danclair, 36, who had been sought by investigators for days, was arrested on Friday in connection with the deaths of two women found in New York City hotel rooms, their bodies naked and showing signs of trauma, the police said. He was charged with second-degree murder in one case and was expected to be charged in the other. He is also a suspect in two rape cases.

Earlier this week, police officials identified Mr. Danclair as a person of interest in the two killings, one in July and another on Sept. 8. He was found by the police on Thursday night and questioned.

Investigators said he had been charged in the most recent death, that of Antoinette Marin, 43, who was found at the Manhattan Broadway Hotel on West 38th Street, near Eighth Avenue.

Chief Aubry said Mr. Danclair met Ms. Marin when she was with a friend on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. “She thought she had met someone she would date,” he said. But days after that first encounter, Chief Aubry said, she was dead.

The earlier victim, Chrissy Bevelaqua, 34, was found on July 23 in a room at the Bushwick Hotel on Bushwick Avenue in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Police officials said it appeared she had been strangled.

“She was just experiencing a difficult time in her life when she met up with him,” Chief Aubry said, suggesting that problems with substance abuse made her vulnerable.

It is unclear if Mr. Danclair has a lawyer.

The two cases were linked after investigators discovered an unusual similarity between them: When both women were found, they had been doused with water, police officials said. The police said that surveillance footage also showed Mr. Danclair leaving the hotels and that his fingerprint was found at one of the crime scenes.

Chief Aubry said both women had “trauma to their neck area.” A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said it would “make the determination on cause and manner of death for both cases as soon as possible.”

The police said on Friday that Mr. Danclair, who has a history of 28 arrests dating back to 1995, is also a suspect in two rapes, one of which involved a 41-year-old woman and took place in Manhattan in 2010. The other occurred on Aug. 23 in Brooklyn.

In the most recent case, the police said, Mr. Danclair met a 34-year-old woman outside a coffee shop in Union Square, and then persuaded her to go with him to Brooklyn, where the authorities believe he raped her in an abandoned building.

Chief Aubry said investigators were also reviewing cases similar to those they have linked to Mr. Danclair. “It seems like there’s a pattern there,” he said.
