TUCKER, Ga. –  A police officer has been shot and wounded at a gas station in suburban Atlanta, authorities said.

The officer was shot in the upper left shoulder shortly before 4 p.m. Friday in Tucker, according to DeKalb County director of public safety Cedric Alexander. Two suspects have been taken into custody, he said.

Alexander said the officer is in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. He added that the 20-year veteran officer was alert and conscious.

Authorities did not release the names, genders, or races of either the officer or the suspects.

Alexander said the officer tried to pull over as part of a gun-running investigation. He said when the officer turned on the patrol car's blue light, the vehicle sped off and the officer began to chase it.

Alexander said the vehicle ultimately crashed into a wall in front of a gas station. He said two suspects jumped out the vehicle, ran across the parking lot and the officer chased them before gunshots were fired at the officer.

Alexander said police believe one of the suspects fired an automatic weapon at the officer.

One suspect was caught onsite. The other fled into a wooded area around the gas station before being captured with the help of a K-9 unit.

Police are still investigating.
