Google announced at the Tokyo Game Show that it’s bringing live game streaming to Android devices, courtesy of its YouTube Gaming service.

YouTube global gaming head Ryan Watt said this capability is launching in Japan first because of the country’s deep tie-in to gaming.

“Japan’s mobile games define its gaming culture, far more so than in other countries,” he said. If you want to see the full keynote, you can check it out here.

Also, Watt said you’ll be able to use a headset or a device’s front-facing camera to add video and audio commentary.

If you haven’t tried out YouTube Gaming on Android, you can grab the app now from the Play Store.

Why this matters: Twitch has a pretty loyal following among gamers, so Google has some work to do in order to make headway. However, YouTube Gaming got a lot of positive marks in our hands-on given its streamlined interface and usually smooth performance. No details were offered about when the mobile streaming feature will hit the U.S. besides, “soon,” so we’ll keep watch for its arrival.
