Audio Visuals: Some Hipsters Get Slapped Real Bad

There’s a whole lot of elbow grease and ingenuity going on this week in the music video roundup. The girls of The Big Moon took it to the hardware store to make their video for “The Road.” Shamir is buzzing around in what looks a lot like a homemade flying saucer and Raury basically made “Friends” using Twitter and a handheld camera. You don’t have to be fancy to land in the roundup, you just have to be genuine. But there’s also some high-level art direction on deck for the more sophisticated palettes out there, with Stromae, Emancipator, and Troye Sivan serving up some beautifully art directed visuals. Elsewhere, things just get really weird with Timmy Trumpet & Chardy and Funkadelic. The following videos contain no gluten.

“Hipsta Shit”—Timmy Trumpet & Chardy feat. The Bondi Hipsters (Above)

Don’t you know I’m gluten freeeeeeee??

“Panic Room”—Autre Ne Veut

There’s something deeply affecting about this incredibly simply visual. If you’ve ever had stage fright or a fear of singing in public, this scene likely embodies a version of exactly what you’ve always felt sick about: Putting yourself out there only to be coldly, dispassionately shut down. It’s like 8th grade musical auditions all over again!

“In Da Car”—Funkadelic & Soul Clap feat. Sly Stone

Well that was a kind of cute way of saying the world is going straight to hell!

“Ocelot”—Emancipator

If the 1990s ambient album series Pure Moods had been for sale with an accompanying visualizer, it feels like this would be it. And that’s not to say this is cheesy! In fact, if Pure Moods had also been able to enlist the creative services of 20 x 20 to help jazz up their woodwinds and tribal chants it would have elevated the compilation from white elephant gift to compelling party background entertainment. Get zen.

“Friends”—Raury

They say the digital age creates distance between people, that despite our wealth of networking platforms we are only more isolated from one another. It’s nice to know that our tools can also bring us together in surprising and otherwise impossible ways. Go out and make some Friends.

“In for the Kill”—Shamir

Shamir charms big in this little video for “In for the Kill,” and it’s thanks to a charmingly homemade aesthetic. This one is for all the dreamers who want their own DIY spaceships.

“Wild”—Troye Sivan

What a lovely little story.

“Quand C’est?”—Stromae

The subtitles here were unexpected, but reveal to us non-French speakers out there that the shadowy spider-like legs reaching for him represent a battle between the artist and cancer, which has apparently plagued his own family if the lyrics are meant to be biographical. Stromae’s almost otherworldly body and choreography set off by only light and shadow make this a strange and engrossing depiction of both his personal struggle with the disease as well as the entire human race’s.

“The Road”—The Big Moon

Big Moon and Alessia Cara should get together and have an un-party, because these kids are seriously jonesing for some nights on the couch! Enjoy this adorably lo-fi video, which was made, apparently, after a trip to the hardware store and a weeklong building project by the band and their friends. Sadly, the fish in the bag is no longer with us, as one of the girls told The Fader: “RIP Nicky Byrne, the goldfish, who ate himself to death two weeks ago.” This one’s for Nicky.
