New Jersey Transit riders faced major delays again on Thursday afternoon because of power problems at the rail tunnels under the Hudson River, officials said.
Trains were delayed by up to 90 minutes in and out of Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, New Jersey Transit said. Around 3:45 p.m., Amtrak officials said normal operations had resumed at the century-old tunnels after an earlier problem with the overhead power system.
“Residual delays can be expected through the evening rush hour as we work through the resulting congestion,” said Craig Schulz, a spokesman for Amtrak, which owns the tunnels.
Amtrak workers made temporary repairs, Mr. Schulz said, and they were working to determine the cause of the problem.
A series of train delays in July brought renewed attention to a proposal to build new tunnels under the river so that Amtrak can repair the current tunnels, which were damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. On Tuesday, Govs. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey offered to provide funding for half of the costs to build new tunnels if the federal government paid for the rest.
On Thursday, New Jersey Transit said that cross-honoring of tickets was in effect with the PATH system, New Jersey Transit buses and private buses at the Port Authority Bus Terminal and New York Waterway.
