Leica Camera AG Usually when the Germans and Italians get together to make something, it just results in some crappy techno. But the latest collaboration between those ever-fashionable Europeans is aimed not at the dance floor, but at the eyeballs of the elite. Famed German optics company Leica has teamed up with famed Italian automotive design house Zagato to create a new set of extra-fancy binoculars. How extra fancy, you ask? Super-extra fancy: they retail for $3,500.But look at them! They’re gorgeous. The Leica Ultravid 8×32 Edition Zagato are sheathed in stark aluminum, and the design is complemented by red anodized rings around the glass pieces in the front. They’re also an optically excellent set of 8×32-power field glasses, with coated lenses, durable construction, and an all-metal, self-lubricating focus system. If you’re a Leica fan, you’ll recognize these as a highly stylized upgrade of the regular (non-Zagato) Leica Ultravid binoculars, which retail for just under $2,000 for comparable models. The extra dough gets you the fresh aluminum skin, plus a Zagato-designed case and a matching Italian leather carrying strap.Exactly what use would anyone have for $3,500 binoculars? Lots of things. Like, watching the rookie Formula 1 driver you hired zip around the course at Monaco. Or keeping an eye out for the UPS guy arriving with this week’s delivery of yacht wax. Or observing from the tower as the masses rise up, storm the gate, and seize power once and for all.The Leica Ultravid 8×32 Edition Zagato will be available in September from select Leica sellers.
