Come Labor Day, Hollywood starts switching its attention from big-budget blockbusters to slightly smaller-budget films, many of which depend more on scripts and acting than CGI. Some arrive hoping for Oscars along with profits. Among them: "Sicario," starring Emily Blunt, left, as an FBI agent tasked with combating the drug war on the Mexican-U.S. border. Benicio del Toro, right, who was in "Traffic" -- a film that had a similar locale -- plays a "sicario," or hitman. The film also stars Josh Brolin, rear center. It opens September 18 in limited release and goes wide in October.

"The Revenant" is the new film from last year's Oscar-winning director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, left. Leonardo DiCaprio, right, stars as a trapper in the 1820s who seeks revenge on the men who left him to die. The film is scheduled to open December 25.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the seventh chapter in the blockbuster series, includes cast members old (Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher) and new (Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley). The plot is a closely held secret, but you can be sure there will be lots of light sabers and interstellar travel. (And if you're wondering if it's Oscar bait, keep in mind the first "Star Wars" was nominated for best picture.) It opens December 18.
