This was a tough week for Audio Visuals, because we just had too many great videos to choose from. Lady Gaga and former actress Rose McGowan made statement pieces. MNEK and Romans made us cry and De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig gave us cats. Cheap trick, Tegenwoordig! “RM486″—Rose McGowan (Above and NSFW)

For years now, Rose McGowan has been one of the most vocal whistleblowers regarding sexism and discrimination in Hollywood. So, after realizing she hated acting, McGowan turned to music and has dropped her first video, directed by long-time Madonna and Lady Gaga collaborator Jonas Åkerlund. The title, “RM486,” is a shout-out to the abortion drug RU-486, and McGowan tells Rolling Stone that the various personae in the video represent various stages of her life, “ranging from ‘Dark Beauty’ (‘representative of the media perceived “goth” period of my life’) to ‘Green Hair Hollywood’ (‘the most agitated,’ with a mouth taped over her mouth) to ‘Art’ (her ‘most powerful’ and ‘rawest’ self).” So if you had questions, those should answer at least a few of them.

“Runnin”—Naughty Boy feat. Beyoncé & Arrow Benjamin

This is surely one of the most remarkable videos ever to land in the roundup. The constant motion and shifting orientation of the landscape while these two lovers pursue each other entirely underwater is stunning. Stream it through your TV. Watch it in HD. Just do what you can to get fully immersed.

“Be Quiet”—Ichor

We can’t say that we get this, but we like the idea that Ichor has fashioned themselves as an all purpose elixir that will eventually morph into a Day After Tomorrow-sized city-consuming tsunami. We’ll take a tall glass of Ichor, please!

“Skyline”—Karma Fields

If you want to understand what’s going on here, look up Vornoi tessellation. It’s very involved, but we suggest you take a ganders.

“Manon”—De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig

Because even though this is the internet we don’t get to celebrate cats nearly enough in the music video roundup.

“Never Forget You”—MNEK and Zara Larsson

Five bucks says you’ll be tearing up by the end of this charming tale about a girl who befriends a giant shaggy monster in on the shores of Iceland.

“Children of the Wild—Steve Angello feat. Mako

Director Guillaume Panariello specializes in ultra slow motion tracking shots. We featured his last effort, “Unconditional Rebel” by Siska, back in February, and he’s returned here with something even more striking. A little boy is fleeing through a war torn and/or apocalyptic landscape, but it’s hard to be afraid for him when it’s all so damn beautiful. We like your style, Panariello.

“Drifted”—The Shoes

This song could be alternately titled, “The Internet: A Tribute.”

“Say My Name”—Peking Duk

LoL is that Matt McGorry from Orange Is the New Black?! It sure is! He’s got two full legs in this music video and they’re adorned with some serious dancing boots.

“The Agony and the Ecstacy”—Romans

So this animated story about an old married couple at the end of the man’s life is really sappy, but it’s also really, really sweet. Hope you kept those tissues around from the MNEK and Zara Larsson video.

Bonus Track: “Till It Happens to You”—Lady Gaga

“Till It Happens” is going in the bonus track section because it deserves a special call out. Gaga made this song and video in conjunction with the filmmakers behind The Hunting Ground, a documentary about the horrifying epidemic of rape on college campuses. It premiered at Sundance, and this musical extension of its message features actresses like Nikki Reed and Kiersey Clemons in addition to various unknowns playing young people being, yes, raped, and then dealing with the aftermath. It’s very hard to watch, because it should be.
